Rdio, iHeartRadio Add Apple CarPlay Support

Do you heart radio? Do you heart Rdio? Do you have one of the not-so-inexpensive CarPlay-supporting Pioneer receivers in your dashboard right now? If so—or if you’re planning to buy one—listen up.

According to Apple Insider, CarPlay functionality is now supported by two more popular music apps: iHeartRadio and Rdio. But here lies some of the frustration with CarPlay—or, at least, figuring out which apps actually work with it.

As 9to5Mac notes, Apple’s website lists a number of apps that allegedly work with CarPlay, including Beats Music, Stitcher, and CBS Radio. Though it has been a few weeks since 9to5Mac tested CarPlay, the blog noted in its overview of Apple’s platform that a number of these apps simply aren’t ready for CarPlay.

In fact, iHeartRadio and Rdio were two such apps listed on Apple’s site as being CarPlay compatible, though that wasn’t actually the case up until these apps’ most recent update.

In addition to the updated app, Rdio also announced today that the company has converted its entire song library into high-quality AAC audio tracks. Normal users can elect to listen to their music in data rates ranging from 64 Kbps to 192 Kbps. Those ponying up $10 each month for a Rdio Unlimited subscription can bump that quality up to 320 Kbps. And if you’d rather not stream high-quality audio when you’re, say, on your carrier’s data plan instead of your own personal Wi-Fi, Rdio now allows users to select quality settings based on specific scenarios.
