Report: Google Eyeing Cars With Built-In Android Access

Google is already experimenting with in-car access to Web services via Android Auto, but the next version of the search giant’s mobile operating system might be built directly into new cars, according to a report.

Reuters, citing two people with knowledge of the matter, reported Friday that Google’s software could become the standard system that powers future cars’ entertainment and navigation features.

The move would be a huge step up from Android Auto, which requires an Android phone to be plugged into a compatible car to access things like streaming music, maps, and other apps. With built-in Android integration, drivers would be able to do all of this without ever having to plug in their smartphone. They would also still be able to access Google services in the car if a phone ran out of power — or was left at home.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the report. Reuters said Google plans to unveil its car plan when it rolls out the next version of its mobile operating system, Android M, in a year or so. But don’t get too excited. As Reuters points out, Google will likely face challenges convincing car makers to integrate Android so tightly into their vehicles.

“Automakers want to keep their brand appeal and keep their differentiation,” IHS Automotive analyst Mark Boyadjis told the news outlet. “Automakers don’t want to have a state of the industry where you get in any vehicle and it’s just the same experience wherever you go.”
